Market competition for home buyers has reached new highs, and the calculations of prices in the most desirable regions of the United States offers revealing insights into the current state of affairs. Amongst the staggering new records set by 2021 real estate: all of the zip codes in the top 10 have median home prices surpassing $4 million.

There was one notable change: Tribeca, the trendy downtown Manhattan neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets and ritzy lofts in former warehouses, didn't crack the top 10 most expensive ZIP codes for the first time in at least five years.

The country's most expensive neighborhood was far and away the posh Silicon Valley suburb of Atherton, California. With its $7 million median sale price, Atherton was crowned the country's priciest ZIP code for the fourth year in a row. Its closest competitor, the quaint Hamptons village of Sagaponack, had a median price that, at $3.9 million, was about half of Atherton's.

The list of most expensive ZIP codes was compiled by the data team at the real-estate-listings site Property Shark, which calculated the median sale price for each ZIP code based on closed sales that took place between January 2014 and June 2015.

Arguably best known as the setting of the TV show "The OC," Newport Beach is one of the most expensive communities in the country. ZIP code 92661 covers the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, a small strip of land with some of the most incredible views (and property prices) around.

Like the neighboring communities of Menlo Park and Palo Alto, Portola Valley attracts a high-tech, high-spending demographic. In addition to being one of the most expensive areas in which to buy a home, 94028 is also one of the top ZIP codes when it comes to Tesla sales.

In Newport Beach, lifeguards make over $120,000 annually. But that probably won't put them in a position to afford real estate in the town's most expensive ZIP code, which is exclusive to Balboa Island, a neighborhood connected by ferry and a causeway to the rest of Newport Beach.

Atherton is the most expensive ZIP code in Silicon Valley. It is known as the home base of numerous tech executives. Notable residents include Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, HP CEO Meg Whitman, and Google chairman Eric Schmidt.

Beating out some of the most prestigious communities in the country, Sagaponack tops the list of most expensive ZIP codes in the US. The Hamptons destination is home to jaw-dropping properties including billionaire Ira Rennert's $248 million mansion, which has 12 chimneys, a two-lane bowling alley, and a 100-car garage.

In order to determine which were the most expensive ZIP codes in Southern California, we looked at all residential transactions closed in 2016, taking into account condo, co-op, single- and the two-family homes. All package deals were excluded.

Since people are super curious about the lives of the rich, PropertyShark looked into where the wealthiest live in the country. Researchers found that the most expensive zip codes came from 10 states, including Florida.

More interestingly, one Florida zip code landed in the Top 10 most expensive ones: Miami Beach (33109)! The website was technically referring to Fisher Island, a coastal community in the area full of affluent homes. The median home sale price for this area in 2022 is $5.2 million!

Unemployment is relatively low, the workforce is highly educated and Arlington is one of the safest cities in the US. Popular with singles and families alike, the most expensive zip codes in Arlington County are 22201, 22202, and 22203.

Around 90% of new Oakland apartments are high end, with panoramic views and in some cases, exercise rooms and fire pits. Piedmont, Crocker Highland and Upper Rockridge have many luxury houses and are among the most expensive neighborhoods in Oakland.

A report from RentCafe lists the most expensive ZIP codes for DC renters. Top of the list is 20037, which covers West End and the parts of Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom. 20003, which includes Hill East, some of Capitol Hill and Navy Yard and 20001, which covers Truxton Circle and Shaw are also in high demand.

Out of the top 100 most expensive zip codes in the US, 70 percent are in California, with the town of Atherton, in the Bay Area in between Mountain View and San Mateo, and its roughly 7,000 inhabitants leading the way.

To build a ranking of the most expensive zip codes in the US, Property Shark calculated the median home sale prices for each zip code and selected the top 100. (The list actually includes 127 zip codes but there were many ties.)

Atherton, the most expensive zip code in the nation for the fifth year in a row, has a median home sale price of $7,475,000, which is much higher than Boston, Massachusetts, at $5,500,000 and Sagaponack, New York at $5,000,000, which are second and third, respectively.

However, it is Los Angeles County who remained the priciest overall, with 21 zip codes topping the list. The famed zip code of 90210, which has been consistently ranked as one of the most expensive in the country, saw a median sale price of $4.124 million over the course of the past year. Neighborhoods like the Pacific Palisades posted median sales prices of $3.25 million, an 18 percent year-over-year increase. Neighborhoods like Bel Air and Beverly Glenn saw median sales prices hit $2.46 million.

In a country of million-dollar listings, California still reigns supreme. According to real estate data provider PropertyShark, the state claimed six of the 10 most expensive zip codes in the U.S. in 2019 and was challenged only by New York and Massachusetts in this upper tier. Among the full list of 125 zip codes, the Golden State occupied a whopping 91 spots.

With 46 of the report's 100 priciest ZIP codes, the Bay Area at large was once again listed as the most expensive metro area in the country. The Los Angeles metro area came in second, with 31 of the report's top ZIP codes coming from LA and Orange counties. In third place was the New York metro area; the town of Sagaponack on Long Island has the second most expensive ZIP code behind Atherton.

If you're looking for a seaside home in Middletown, focus your search on the eastern side of town which is less developed and closer to the shore. The western part of Middletown is more developed, and has the greater share of Middletown apartments, condos, and single family homes. The most expensive areas of town include Sachuest and Middletown center, with Lawtons and the Pier Access Road offering less expensive Middletown homes.
